How Do Slot Machines Work?s

If you love playing the slots, you may easily spend hours upon hours feeding the machine nickels and hoping for a big prize. But, have you ever stopped to think about how these fun little machines work?

What Happens When You Pull the Slot Machine Handle?

You just might be surprised to learn about all of the things that take place inside a slot machine when you pull the handle. First, pulling the handle causes a hook mechanism to rotate. This mechanism then grabs a component that is called the kicker and causes it to be pulled toward the player.

The kicker also contains a component called the catch, which is on the opposite side of the hook mechanism. This kicker grabs a control cam and causes it to be moved forward. This causes a series of gears to rotate. Since these gears are connected to the control cam, a spring is able to pull the control cam and put it back in its original place while also slowing it down and creating a mechanical delay.

As the control cam is moved forward, it causes a spring-mounted cam plate to be released and move across the back of the slot machine. At the same time, the cam plate pulls the stoppers away. The kicker continues to move and push the stoppers into the catches in the cam plate, which holds the stoppers in place and allows the reels and the discs to rotate.

In the meantime, the handle continues moving the kicker and the paddles on the kicker push the discs forward. The bottom portion of the hook mechanism then presses against a slanted surface when the handle is pulled completely back. This causes the hook to move forward and release the kicker.

The kicker moves backward at a fairly rapid pace when the kicker spring jerks. The kicker paddle than hits the discs’ notches and causes the reels to spin rapidly. The control cam continues to slowly return to its position as this happens and it pushes the cam plate back once it reaches its original position. This releases the stoppers and the cam plate releases each stopper one at a time. Each of these toppers then springs forward and locks into place.

How Does the Slot Payout Happen?

There are many different payout designs used with slot machines, but the simplest method involves measuring the depth of the notches in the discs. After you put your money in the machine, it is placed in a transparent case. The bottom of this case contains a movable shutter that is held closed by metal linkage.

When the player hits a jackpot, the linkage is released and the shutter opens so the coins can fall out of the machine. Each of the discs in the machine has a notch for its stopping position on the reel. When they fall into the jackpot position, the notch is deeper. This deeper notch causes the shutter to open so the winning jackpot can be released.
